Health Advocate: Oral Health Update

Executive Summary

In this month’s Health Advocate, Senior Attorney Michelle Lilienfeld examines the status of oral health of our most vulnerable populations. Beyond coverage issues, Lilienfeld explores some of the other barriers preventing children and adults living on limited incomes from accessing quality oral health care services. For instance, many dental providers, citing low reimbursement rates, will refuse treating Medicaid beneficiaries. Recommendations for improving Medicaid oral health care services, include finding ways to “incorporate oral health into primary care (e.g. fluoride varnish application),” Lilienfeld, in part, concludes.
