Eliminating Barriers to Medication-Assisted Treatment in Medicaid

Executive Summary

Few individuals with opioid use disorder currently have access to medication-assisted treatment, a highly effective overdose prevention treatment. As the single largest payer of OUD treatment, Medicaid has an important role to play in reducing barriers and increasing access. In this issue brief, we identify persiting barriers to MAT coverage in Medicaid and federal policy and make recommendations for improving treatment coverage and access.
