Disability Advocacy: Equity & Nondiscrimination

NHeLP’s Disability Advocacy Team works to advance the rights of people with disabilities to access health care on a nondiscriminatory basis and to reduce health inequities that disability communities experience. We ensure that federal and state policies, including those implementing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are effectively shaped and enforced to promote inclusive and equitable health care for all disabled individuals.

We advocate to reduce plan benefit designs that place discriminatory exclusions or limitations on services or supports that people with disabilities need to participate in community life. We also work to promote accessibility in health care settings, and reduce discrimination in health care delivery. We approach all of our advocacy through the lens of health equity, including equity for people who face discrimination or oppression based on multiple identities.
