Women’s Health Defense Table Letter to Congressional Leadership Opposing Medicaid Work Requirements

Executive Summary

On May 9th, 2023, more than fifty organizational members of the Women’s Health Defense Table (WHDT)* and national allies sent a letter to Congressional leadership urging them to exclude Medicaid work requirements and other program cuts from any debt ceiling or budget negotiations or legislation. Such changes would result in deeply harmful losses of health coverage and access for people with low incomes and underserved populations nationwide. We urged Congress to raise the debt ceiling instead of defaulting on Medicaid beneficiaries, including women, nonbinary people, and their families, across the United States.

*The WHDT is a coalition of national organizations co-chaired by the National Health Law Program, National Partnership for Women and Families, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Since our inception in 2016, WHDT has worked to protect and strengthen access to health care, including reproductive and sexual health care, for women (including transgender, queer, and intersex women) and nonbinary people. Protecting Medicaid is a central focus of our work.
