Threats to Women’s Reproductive Health Under the American Health Care Act (AHCA)

Executive Summary

The so-called American Health Care Act (AHCA), pending in the U.S. Senate, would repeal progressive health care reforms brought about by the landmark Affordable Care Act (ACA), especially harming women’s access to reproductive health care services. In this fact sheet, Senior Attorney Amy Chen explains how AHCA would severely undermine health care coverage for women — by radically cutting federal Medicaid funding, ending Medicaid expansion, preventing women from accessing care at Planned Parenthood, increasing private health insurance coverage, restricting access to abortion care in private health insurance plans, allowing states to waive protections for people with preexisting conditions, and allowing states to waive essential health benefits.
