WASHINGTON—The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) is honored to be the recipient of the inaugural Brown Select Award from the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services. Voted on by our peers, the Brown Select Award goes to a program or project that provides innovative contributions to the delivery of legal services.
“We are thrilled to receive the Brown Select Award from the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services,” said Elizabeth G. Taylor, NHeLP executive director. “This demonstrates the high regard in which our program is held. Our team of talented professionals works tirelessly to ensure that all people have access to quality, affordable health care. Our work, whether it is in the courtroom or working with policymakers and legal advocates, touches the lives of millions of low-income individuals and families. Thank you to all who supported us for this award.”
For 45 years, NHeLP has maintained an active litigation docket, many of them federal court class action cases, as well as submitting amicus briefs in courts of appeals and Supreme Court cases. NHeLP serves as one of the most respected protectors of court access for people who seek judicial relief when their rights to coverage or services are wrongfully denied. Our litigation staff has served as lead or co-counsel in many of the major Medicaid cases litigated over the last four decades.
NHeLP’s work goes far beyond the courtroom. NHeLP’s team of lawyers and other professionals works with advocates from all 50 states, responding to nearly 3,000 consultation requests every year, and enabling those advocates to provide quality representation to an ever-expanding population of lives that we touch. NHeLP’s lawyers and policy analysts also work with state and federal policymakers to protect and improve access to quality, affordable health care for people who otherwise would never be able to afford it. They give at-risk populations a voice in federal policymaking, protect the health care safety net, and advance health access and reproductive health.
NHeLP was recognized as the Brown Select winner out of 30 programs and projects nominated for the Louis M. Brown Award for Legal Access. NHeLP extends its sincere congratulations to the other ABA winner this year, Call for Justice, LLC, the recipient of this year’s Louis M. Brown award.
