NHeLP Decries Federal Funding Freeze, Vows to Fight to Protect Medicaid and Other Programs for Low-Income Individuals and Families

Washington, D.C. — The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) is calling on federal leaders to act immediately to address the chaos created by technical outages in Medicaid funding systems and the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze funding for hundreds of critical federal health and other programs. While Medicaid funding currently remains exempt from the legally dubious freeze, these disruptive federal actions are jeopardizing health care access and threatening the well-being of millions of individuals and families across the country.

The ripple effects of this unnecessary disruption—combined with the freeze on other vital programs—cannot be understated. People’s lives and livelihoods are at stake.

“According to comments from the White House and subsequent memo from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Medicaid funding is not frozen, but this is a rapidly changing situation and the team at NHeLP is closely monitoring it. We are taking these funding threats seriously and will continue to provide resources and guidance to advocates across the country who work tirelessly to ensure that Medicaid meets the health care needs of nearly 80 million people,” said Sarah Somers, Legal Director at the National Health Law Program. “However, the ripple effects of this unnecessary disruption—combined with the freeze on other vital programs—cannot be understated. People’s lives and livelihoods are at stake.”

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP) alone serve millions of low-income families, including children, older adults, and people with disabilities. Medicaid funding disruptions—even temporary ones—could delay care, destabilize state programs, and create general confusion for both patients and providers.

“A healthy nation depends on a strong, reliable health care system, and Medicaid is a crucial part of that system” said Somers. “The Trump administration must stop creating chaos and instead focus on ensuring that every person, regardless of income, has access to the care they need.”
