House Vote Puts Medicaid on the Chopping Block

Washington, D.C. – Last night, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget resolution that fast-tracks dangerous and sweeping cuts to essential programs, including an alarming $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid and other vital services. This vote sets the stage for enacting Donald Trump’s radical agenda, threatening the health care of millions of people across the country to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and large corporations.

Make no mistake—there is no way to cut $880 billion from Medicaid without devastating consequences

“Make no mistake—there is no way to cut $880 billion from Medicaid without devastating consequences,” said Mara Youdelman, Managing Director of Federal Advocacy at the National Health Law Program. “Medicaid is already a lean program, efficiently delivering care to millions of individuals and families nationwide. These cuts would force states to slash services, reduce provider payments, or kick people off coverage entirely. The idea that this funding gap can be closed through eliminating ‘fraud and waste’ is a dangerous myth.”

“Millions of low-income families, children, people with disabilities, and older adults depend on Medicaid for life-saving care. Slashing its funding would devastate public health, deepen health disparities, force hospital closures, and drive more people into medical and financial crises,” said Elizabeth G. Taylor, Executive Director at the National Health Law Program. “NHeLP urges the House and the Senate to reject this budget framework and defend the health, well-being, and dignity of millions of people. We will continue to fight to protect Medicaid from these reckless attacks.”
