Senior Attorney

Amanda Avery is a Senior Attorney in the National Health Law Program’s North Carolina office, where she is helping to prepare the Fifth Edition of the Advocate’s Guide to the Medicaid Program.

 

Before joining the National Health Law Program, Amanda clerked for Judge W. Earl Britt at the Eastern District of North Carolina.  While at the court, she was responsible for managing Judge Britt’s mental competency caseload.  Her work focused on whether individuals with mental health conditions could be civilly committed as dangerous persons under federal law.

 

Amanda began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge John D. Geathers at the South Carolina Court of Appeals.  She received her J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law, where she was both an intern and a volunteer for the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence.  She received her B.A. with majors in Sociology and Public Policy Analysis from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

 

In her free time, Amanda enjoys assisting with her family’s home renovation projects.
