Steven Schmidt is a Senior Attorney with the National Health Law Program’s North Carolina office.  Steven is part of NHeLP’s litigation and enforcement team, working in the courts to protect and advance the health rights of low income and underserved individuals.

Before joining NHeLP, Steven worked for over a decade at Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid’s Minnesota Disability Law Center, where he represented people with disabilities in numerous cases under the Medicaid Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act, and Fair Housing Act.  Steven’s work included two Olmstead class actions against the State of Minnesota, which sought to expand access to home community-based services and ensure that individuals received services in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs.  Steven also worked on numerous policy matters that strengthened protections for Medicaid recipients, and provided education and training on a variety of disability-related legal issues.

Steven received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and his J.D. from the University of Minnesota.  When he is not at work, Steven can be found golfing, biking, cross-country skiing, or cheering on Wisconsin sports.
