Amid escalating attacks on sexual and reproductive rights in the U.S., people are facing increasing barriers to prescription drugs that help manage their chronic conditions or related symptoms. Health care entities are denying or delaying access to these medications because they can end or cause complications to pregnancies, even though the individuals seeking access are not pregnant. These barriers may violate civil rights and coverage laws. Advocates have a number of avenues to enforce related rights. This Advocate’s Primer summarizes prescription drug barriers reported to date, describes other medications at risk, and outlines legal strategies to secure access to care.
