Trump Seeks to Punish California Over Abortion Access

Administration Targets California Law Requiring Private Insurance to Cover Abortion

Washington, D.C. – The National Health Law Program strongly condemns the Trump administration’s threat to withhold federal funding from California over its requirement that private insurers cover abortion care.

“Access to health care should be based on a person’s needs, in consultation with their provider,” said Fabiola Carrión, a senior attorney in NHeLP’s Los Angeles office. “The people of California expect health insurance plans to treat abortion like any other health care service. President Trump, instead, is suing California for meeting the needs of its residents. Substituting religious belief for evidence and the medical standard of care, the administration wants to impose a rigid ideology on millions of California individuals and families, regardless of the human impact. California’s law simply attempts to level the playing field and guarantee equal access to abortion services. This lawsuit is an insult to Californians and everyone else who seeks access to reproductive health care, including abortions.”
