The California Future of Abortion Council Responds to Governor Gavin Newsom’s Revised Budget Proposal

CALIFORNIA – The Steering Committee of the California Future of Abortion Council, which includes ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE, Black Women for Wellness Action Project, Essential Access Health, National Health Law Program, NARAL Pro-Choice California, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, Training in Early Abortion for Comprehensive Healthcare (TEACH), responds to the proposed investment by Governor Gavin Newsom in sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion services.

“We applaud this historic investment by Governor Newsom. It is a step in the right direction and a sign of our state’s leadership in recognizing and responding to the unprecedented threat to abortion access in the country. This funding will be critical for health centers and providers to meet the anticipated increased need for abortion care, as well as for patients – whether they live in California or a state with severe abortion restrictions or out right bans – to access key information about abortion and other reproductive health care available in our state.”

“We will continue to advocate for additional funding, including logistical and practical support (like travel, lodging, meals, childcare, etc) for people in need of abortion services and additional resources to support a pilot project in Los Angeles County, an anticipated hub for patients traveling to get the time sensitive abortion services they want and need.”

“Just because a right exists does not mean access to that right is accessible. Providing key funding to organizations on the ground helping with that access is a key component of California remaining and leading the nation as a Reproductive Freedom state.”

The California Future of Abortion Council looks forward to continued conversations with Governor Newsom, Senate President Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, key committee chairs, and other legislative leaders to advocate for these essential investments.

In March, in response to the Governor’s proposed budget in January, the California Future of Abortion Council sent a budget letter advocating for many of the components included in the Governor’s revised budget blueprint.
