Today marks what would have been the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that established the constitutional right to abortion. Since the loss of that constitutional protection in 2022, we have seen a marked escalation in extreme abortion bans and other measures aimed at restricting bodily autonomy as well as sexual and reproductive health care access.
The threats to abortion access continue to grow, especially as the new Congress and the Trump administration take office. In the face of these relentless attacks on bodily autonomy, the National Health Law Program (NHeLP) reaffirms our commitment to protecting and expanding equitable abortion access, particularly for people with low incomes, Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, young people, individuals with disabilities, and LGTBQI+ populations.
We know that abortion is health care and believe that comprehensive insurance coverage is a vital component of the efforts to ensure that all people can access abortion, regardless of income, race, disability, or zip code.
Accurate information on the availability of insurance coverage of abortion will be more important than ever as we enter the second Trump administration.
