“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” — Fred Rogers
The news from Minnesota is scary. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sent a surge into Minneapolis. Armed and masked federal agents have stormed Minneapolis neighborhoods dragging older people like Chongly Scott Thao, from their homes.
Children as young as five-year-old Liam Ramos and even babies have been seized by ICE and are now being detained in deplorable conditions.
Many Minnesotans have become helpers. Some have organized food drives to feed their immigrant neighbors who are terrified to leave their homes to go to work or even to school. Others have braved freezing temperatures to warn their neighbors about ICE presence and to document ICE actions as observers.
ICE has also targeted the helpers. A poet and mom of three, Renee Good, was gunned down in her vehicle and Alex Pretti, a nurse for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs was shot repeatedly by ICE agents when he came to the aid of a woman who was being attacked.
At NHeLP, we deplore the hateful and xenophobic speech that pits Americans against their immigrant neighbors. We denounce policies that allow ICE agents to racially profile, harass, attack, and kill Black and brown residents, like Keith Porter Jr., Isaias Sanchez Barboza, Jose Castro-Rivera, and countless more. And we are sickened by the escalating violence against the brave helpers in Minnesota.
NHeLP demands that every person living on American soil receive the due process protections enshrined in the 5th and 14th Amendment.
NHeLP stands with the helpers, resisters, and organizers.
