For decades, the National Health Law Program has been at the forefront of efforts to bridge health care reform and sexual and reproductive health advocacy in the United States. With deep expertise in Medicaid, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), civil rights law, and universal health coverage design, our interdisciplinary team of lawyers and policy strategists work to integrate sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice into all efforts to strengthen and protect our health care system, particularly for low-income and underserved communities.
As trusted legal and policy advisors, we shape federal and state legislative and administrative policies that foster equitable access to comprehensive, affordable, high-quality, and nondiscriminatory sexual and reproductive health care. Through policy lawyering, advocacy, enforcement, and litigation, we fight threats such as Medicaid cuts and restrictions, ACA rollbacks, and attacks on civil rights.
Coalition Leadership
NHeLP leads national coalition efforts bridging federal health care reform and sexual and reproductive health advocacy. Some examples of our leadership include:
- Co-chairing the National Coalition for Gender Justice in Health Policy (NCGJHP), which mobilizes the sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice movement and allied health advocates to protect Medicaid, the ACA, and related civil rights from federal policy threats.
- Organizing the Medicaid and Reproductive Justice Collaborative, a movement lawyering hub that builds power to advance reproductive justice through Medicaid and federal health care reform.
- Organizing the Health Equity and Accountability Act (HEAA) Community Working Group’s Title V Subcommittee, which works to integrate sexual and reproductive health and gender justice into the Tri-Caucus’ racial health equity agenda.
- Co-leading the Medicaid Family Planning Group, a coalition of advocates working to increase access to family planning services for Medicaid enrollees through federal administrative and legislative advocacy.
Through movement lawyering and advocacy, legal and policy analysis, technical assistance, and education; strategic support; and seminal resources such as the “Advocate’s Guide to Sexual and Reproductive Health in the Medicaid Program,” we arm policymakers and advocates with the tools they need to champion sexual and reproductive health and justice in state and federal health care reform debates.
