Doula Medicaid Project
Doula Medicaid Interactive Map:
Current State Efforts at Expanding Access to Doula Care
We are excited to share our interactive map depicting current state efforts at expanding Medicaid coverage of doula care. We hope this map is a more visually appealing and user-friendly way for doulas, advocates, researchers, legislators, and other stakeholders to track and compare state efforts across the country. This map tracks in real time the information on our state efforts chart, which we have been maintaining consistently since 2021. Note that our state efforts chart will also continue to be updated for those who prefer to view the information in that format.
How To Use This Map: The map is color coded for states that are actively reimbursing for Medicaid coverage of doula care, states in the process of implementing Medicaid coverage for doula care, states that have taken some adjacent action aimed at ultimately implementing Medicaid coverage for doula care (such as putting in place a mechanism for statewide doula certification, creating doula advisory boards/committees, funding doula pilot programs, etc.), states that have proposed actions related to Medicaid coverage of doula care (but have not yet passed legislation or taken action), and states that have no current action. The map allows you to navigate the information for each state/territory by either clicking on the state/territory in the map itself, or calling up the state/territory from the drop-down menu below the map. Information for each state/territory is further broken down into Summary of Efforts (summary of implementation efforts), Timeline (key dates related to implementation), Private Insurance Coverage (describing private insurance coverage bills either introduced or signed into law), and Additional Resources (listing key relevant resources for that state, as well as any state specific reports and/or surveys). For states that are already actively reimbursing for Medicaid coverage of doula care, there is an additional tab for the Current Coverage Landscape. You can create a link to each individual page of information from the “Share this” button on the right-hand side.
