On May 1, 1971, the National Health Law Program published its first newsletter, under the direction of Ruth Galanter. The newsletter was dedicated to “promoting common effort by lawyers, consumers and health workers by increasing the flow of information about health-related legal work.” It was sent to health councils, free health clinics, health workers’ groups, and whoever else requested it. As editor, Ruth Galanter published 101 issues.
“My job at NHeLP was to translate legalese into English. I started the newsletter early in 1971 and with it a crusade to enable the client community and their social service advocates to talk effectively with their lawyers.” – Ruth Galanter, Publisher of 101 issues of the NHeLP newsletter
