Board of Directors Announcement

The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) invites you to submit names of individuals who would be strong additions to NHeLP’s Board of Directors. Recommendations should be submitted to Board Governance Committee Co-Chairs, Ron Wisor ([email protected]) and Ann Kappler ([email protected]).

Qualifications for membership on NHeLP’s Board of Directors include the following:

  • Board Members must have the time and expertise to provide meaningful oversight, direction and support, and be free of disabling conflicts of interest.
  • Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, law, academia, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
  • NHeLP is committed to cultivating an environment that empowers an exceptional and diverse staff and to advancing health equity in our work. We seek board members who share that commitment. We also encourage individuals to join our board whose background may contribute to NHeLP’s pursuit of its equity goals, including people of color, women, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ individuals. Ideal Board candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive experience, with significant leadership accomplishments in business, law, academia, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
  • A passion for pursuing and supporting NHeLP’s mission and a commitment to assisting in raising funds for NHeLP.
  • A commitment to and understanding of NHeLP’s constituents.
  • Diplomatic skills and an affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and collegiality.

NHeLP seeks Board Members with a variety of professional experiences, cultural backgrounds, spectrum of life experiences, and geographic reach.  Among the areas of expertise sought on the Board are:

  • Governance and leadership
  • Communications, public relations, and marketing
  • Finance, financial management and investments
  • Fundraising
  • Legal
  • Personnel and human resources
  • Advocacy and government relations
  • Strategic planning and development

In particular, the Board is currently seeking individuals with:

  • Expertise in developing and implementing multi-year and multi-dimensional fundraising strategies.
  • Organizational development and governance expertise.
  • Connections with corporations that may be interested in NHeLP’s mission.
  • Ability to magnify NHeLP’s voice by reaching beyond individuals and organizations already aligned with NHeLP and its work.

NHeLP serves a diverse population and seeks a board reflective of that diversity.

Recommendations should include the following information on the candidate:

  • Skills, experience or other qualifications that match the criteria for Board membership set out above; and
  • Information necessary to determine whether the candidate meets the independence standards outlined in NHeLP’s Bylaws and Conflict of Interest policy.
