NHeLP Statement on Highland Park Shooting

On July 4th, 2022, seven people were killed and more than two dozen people- ranging from 8 years old to 85 years old were seriously injured in a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois. A person of interest was arrested and a “high-powered rifle” was recovered at the scene.

July fourth was supposed to be a day to celebrate America. Instead, it became a day of death and tragedy for many American families. The National Health Law Program stands with the shooting victims, the Highland Park community, and the tens of thousands of people who lose their lives to gun violence each year in the United States. Gun violence is a public health crisis and must be addressed. We demand that federal and state lawmakers take action now.
