The National Health Law Program is disappointed by Governor Gavin Newsom’s comments criticizing transgender athletes on a recent episode of his podcast. Newsom’s words aren’t just upsetting—they’re harmful. They dismiss the identity of transgender Californians and make it even harder for trans youth and young adults to find community, build teamwork skills, and enjoy sports, which are the foundation of high school and college athletics.
Newsom’s comments were particularly disheartening given Newsom’s previous track record of showing strong leadership and allyship on behalf of LGBTQI+ Californians, including transgender Californians. Historically, California has led the nation in protecting LGBTQI+ rights, and has taken important steps to protect the rights of transgender youth. As an organization that advocates for the health rights of Californians, we urge Governor Newsom to affirm his commitment to protecting the rights of all LGBTQI+ Californians, and especially transgender Californians.
