NHeLP Condemns Killing of Jayland Walker

Again, police stopped a Black man for a traffic violation and again the Black man was shot and killed. His name was Jayland Walker. On June 27, Akron, Ohio police stopped him because of a traffic infraction. The stop led to a chase and police officers fired approximately 90 bullets at 25-year-old Jayland Walker. He was struck more than 60 times resulting in his death.

Traffic stops should not become executions. We are sickened by the all-too-familiar scenario of Black people being gunned down by officers who have been hired to protect and serve. Black Lives Matter. Jayland Walker’s life mattered.

National Health Law Program stands with Mr. Walker’s family in demanding a thorough and transparent investigation of his killing. We demand accountability.
