Amicus: United States v. California, Eastern District of California, 9th Circuit

Executive Summary

The National Health Law Program submitted an amicus brief on behalf of the organization, and 42 other legal health organizations, and human and civil rights advocates, and labor groups opposing the Trump administration’s heavy-handed effort to overturn three California laws that provide vital protections for immigrants in their communities, their workplaces, and in immigration detention centers, with historically dangerous health care conditions.

The amicus brief describes how living with chronic stress, anxiety, and fear of hostile immigration enforcement results in myriad negative health consequences for immigrants and their families, and warns that these public health harms would be exacerbated if the court grants the Trump administration’s request to enjoin the state’s laws.
