Protect Medicaid Funding: Affordability, Issue 5 (Updated Feb. 2017)

Executive Summary

This fifth issue in NHeLP’s Protect Medicaid Funding series examines how critical Medicaid is to helping low-income individuals and underserved populations access quality health care, and how efforts to cut or cap funding of Medicaid would endanger that access, and worsen health outcomes for the most vulnerable. For example, faced with limited federal support, states would likely “increase cost sharing to reduce utilization and push costs onto enrollees.” This piece was updated in February, 2017 with a story of Leah, a three-year-old with multiple health care concerns, including a chronic lung disease. Leah’s family is only able to afford in-home care for Leah because of Medicaid.
